Anton Chekhov

Media_http28mediatumb_bwihm

Anton Chekhov (Jan. 29, 1860 - 1904) - writer by night, doctor by day - or as he put it: Medicine is my lawful wife and literature my mistress; when I get tired of one, I spend the night with the other...

Chekhov suffered from tuberculosis and despite spending much time at spas and his dacha at Yalta, he died at the early age of 44. The account of his last moments, as told in his wife’s memoirs, has become legend:

“Anton sat up unusually straight and said loudly and clearly (although he knew almost no German): Ich sterbe. The doctor calmed him, took a syringe, gave him an injection of camphor, and ordered champagne. Anton took a full glass, examined it, smiled at me and said: “It’s a long time since I drank champagne.” He drained it, lay quietly on his left side, and I just had time to run to him and lean across the bed and call to him, but he had stopped breathing and was sleeping peacefully as a child…”

Lillian Hellman

Media_httpwwwtcpbsorg_wujkd

She became a writer at a time when writers were celebrities and their recklessness was admirable. Like Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Hammett, Lillian Hellman was a smoker, a drinker, a lover, and a fighter. Hellman maintained a social and political life as large and restless as her talent. While her plays were a constant challenge to injustice, her memoirs were personal accounts of the exciting and turbulent life behind the art.

According to Wikipidiea, "Hammett reportedly modeled Nora Charles, of the Thin Man series, on his longtime partner Lillian Hellman"

Ernest Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961)

Fifty years ago, on July 2, 1961, the writer who seemed to personify courage and strength put a shotgun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Ernest Hemingway was 61 years old. He was a boxer, a boozer, a philanderer and big-game hunter who wrote some of the most sublime prose of the English language: short, sharp, piercing sentences that told stories about soldiers, lovers, hunters, bravery, fear and death.
